a day in the life at camp by Laurel
Friday: The campers, scheduled to arrive at 5 p.m., finally arrived at 9:40 p.m., in a huge touring bus, after a day-long down pour that continued still. They were relieved to get to us after navigating our 2 mile long, dirt road/drive-way.
Saturday: 5:15 a.m. Woke up before the alarm! Was planning to get up at 5:30 a.m.
5:20 a.m.: The electric fence alarm shrieks loudly! Sunbury Christian Camp is located in the middle of acres of cane fields, way back from any civilization. A gated, electric fence surrounds the entire camp for security. The shrill alarm alerts “someone” they must check to see why.
5:21 a.m.: Dick starts walking the fence line looking for branches, leaves, snakes that got a little too close….anything touching the wire that could set the alarm off.
5:25 a.m.: Alpha Alert men (security company) arrive in a plain truck.
5:26 a.m.: I open the gate letting them in, then wonder about the plain truck part. Two men, armed with pistols in hand, start walking the fence. I remember Dick is out there…and they don’t know him! So I shout… ”Hey, my husband is out there and he’s ok to be there!”
5:29 a.m.: Awaken Carlene, the Camp Director’s wife, to question the “plain truck – no logo” concern. She assures me it is ok.
5:45 a.m.: Alpha Alert men are ready to leave, so I open the gate again.
5:55 a.m.: Dick is back…having removed numerous pieces of debris, he turns the alarm back on….and it doesn’t sound off again!! Rare on the first try. We praise the Lord!!
6:05 a.m.: Mrs. Kunene and Ntombifuti, ladies who work in the kitchen, walk up to the gate. After letting them in, we find out Ntombifuti’s car had stalled on the dirt road leading into Sunbury. Did I tell you it had been pouring rain all night, and was still “dripping” heavily?
6:07 a.m.: I open the pantry for Mrs. Kunene and get her supplies to begin working in the kitchen and dorms for the day. The camper’s leader, Zeenath, asks that the tuck shop (camp store) be open at 8:45 a.m.
6:08 a.m.: Carlene and Dick take a Sunbury car to see how they can help the stalled car.
6:10 a.m.: Check tuck shop – restock soda, chips and candy shelves.
6:20 a.m.: Open the gate to let Carlene and Dick drive back in. They left the stalled car to be towed and Ntombifuti called home for another car to pick them up.
6:30 a.m. Ntombifuti, in second car, back at the gate…open it again.
6:32 a.m.: Marveled!! It’s only 6:32!!!!
The rest of the weekend slowed down a bit, and Praise God, we made it through. Thanks for praying!
